WHAT IS THE CBL?

The Canadian Basketball league (CBL) is a FIBA professional development league playing under the rules of FIBA. The league was founded in Toronto, Canada on July 30, 2014 by Butch Carter and is set to launch in the Fall of 2016 with the regular season commencing December, 2016 featuring 4 Ontario based franchises with nationwide expansion within 3 years.

WHO IS BUTCH CARTER?

The tryouts will be primarily conducted by CBL President- Butch Carter, retired NBA player & coach who has seen success in basketball at every level. As a player Butch was named the State of Ohio’s High School “Player of the Year” in 1976 and went on to play four seasons (’76-’80) at Indiana University under Hall of Fame coach Bobby Knight where he was named NIT tournament MVP in 1979 and captained the team to the 1980 Big Ten championship before being drafted by the LA Lakers. His six seasons (’81-’86) in the NBA across four teams (Lakers, Pacers, Knicks, 76er’s) included the all-time record for most points scored in an overtime period (14 vs Celtics) that remained unbroken for 20 years (’84-’04).

Coach Carter’s accolades began by being named the State of Ohio’s High School “Coach of the Year” in 1988. After stints as an assistant coach at Long Beach & Dayton (NCAA) and with the Milwaukee Bucks and Toronto Raptors, Butch was promoted to Head Coach of the Raptors serving from (’98-’00). Coach Carter is credited with the successful development of NBA super stars Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady and is the first coach in history to take a team from less than 20 wins to the playoffs in just two seasons. He is widely regarded around the NBA & Global Basketball community as one of the pioneers of basketball data analytics, developing and implementing statistical modeling for player evaluations since 1998.

CBL Director of Basketball Operations Garrett Kelly will also assist running the workout. Garrett played at the NCAA Division I level at Loyola University of Maryland and has had successful coaching stints at Catholic University of America in D.C., Radford University in Virginia, and Siena College in Albany, NY.
